Social media and social networking definitely have drawbacks, but also many benefits. Social networking platforms open a world full of possibilities and connections for people. Whether that be finding a new job, making new friends, learning of ways to get involved in your community or simply asking complete strangers random questions you just need the answer to. We can open our world up through the use of social media but all that good also comes with a bit of danger.
If we look at Facebook, for example, there is a lot of good, and bad that people can run into. There are opportunities to sell and buy products on Facebook, along with following and staying connected with old and new friends and following your favorite creators. Along with staying connected with people or things you may want to, there is also a connection to people and things you may not want. Hateful words type much easier than they are said. People can easily run into rude individuals while on these sites and these comments can dramatically influence a person's self-esteem. Check out this interesting chart, found on Pinterest, addressing just a few of the pros and cons that come along with using the Facebook app.
Another issue people run into regarding self-esteem and Facebook is the recommended videos or quote pages that pop up when mindlessly scrolling. Some days we feel our phones must have been listening to us because everything we see relates exactly to how we are feeling. Truth be told, Facebook gives you videos and pages which relate to your usual likes. If you are liking and watching depressing or sad videos, more of these will begin popping up on your feed, in turn feeding us with more harmful thoughts rather than helpful ones. Now, the app works in reverse as well, placing happy and uplifting material on our feeds when we are interested in it. Depending on your mood, apps such as Facebook help to perpetuate it, good or bad.
