Digital Natives vs. Digital Immigrants

What is the difference between digital natives and digital immigrants? As Marc Prensky discussed in the article, Digital Native, Digital Immigrants, in today's world there are two types of learners. Digital natives are those of us which were born in the time of the digital world. These natives know the language, know the slang, and understand the ins and outs of the society. The digital immigrants are not quite so technologically savvy. The digital immigrants are described as those who were born before/outside of the digital world who have tried to pick it up later in life. Just as an immigrant to a new country, old habits and ways of life still remain for digital immigrants, Prensky called this a person's “accent”. Mark Pensky How has the immigrant/native divide affected the classroom? While many teachers and professors are considered digital immigrants and most students are considered digital natives, there is a bit of a language barrier in the classroom. As digital immigrant...

From Exhilarating Beginnings to Dreaded Ends

We've all been there , were out and we meet someone new, someone we actually enjoy being around and so the story begins. There are specific stages all relationships go through, and a great model to look at when deciphering where your relationship stands is the Knapp's Relational Model . You may be wondering, "why would I use a model to determine my next steps or where my relationship is going?", well I'll tell you. The Knapps model incorporates two individual models in itself. Covering ten steps, each model has its own five. In the escalation model these steps include initiating, experimenting, intensifying, integrating, and bonding. The escalation phase is always the better of the two models to stay in. The second model, the termination model is no one's favorite. The stages of this model are differentiating, circumscribing, stagnating, avoiding, and the hardest stage, termination .  Termination is the ending of a relationship by both individuals involved o...

Facebook: the good, the bad, and the ugly

Social media and social networking definitely have drawbacks, but also many benefits. Social networking platforms open a world full of possibilities and connections for people. Whether that be finding a new job, making new friends, learning of ways to get involved in your community or simply asking complete strangers random questions you just need the answer to. We can open our world up through the use of social media but all that good also comes with a bit of danger. If we look at Facebook, for example, there is a lot of good, and bad that people can run into. There are opportunities to sell and buy products on Facebook, along with following and staying connected with old and new friends and following your favorite creators. Along with staying connected with people or things you may want to, there is also a connection to people and things you may not want. Hateful words type much easier than they are said. People can easily run into rude individuals while on these...

About Me

Hi everyone! My name is Reilly, and I am an Agricultural Science Major. I am aiming to work in the livestock/agricultural industries after I graduate. I have raised all different kinds of livestock, from horses to hogs and today I work as an equine vet assistant. My end goal remains uncertain; I may work towards becoming a veterinarian or work in feed/vet med/agricultural sales. In my free time I am a volunteer youth basketball coach in my hometown. I have been doing this for roughly five years now and absolutely love it. When it comes to my hopes in regard to this class, I hope to learn how to effectively use online communications to my advantage whether it be personal or professional relations.
